“Ithink I’m going to pass out,” I say between labored breaths. I’m wringing my hands as I hyperventilate in Reid’s living room.

“Why?” Reid asks.

“What do you mean why? I’m about to meet Chef Aranda. What happens here today could change my life.”

“Gabriel is only a person,” Reid says, and I can hear a hint of jealousy in his voice.

“Yes, I know he is a person, but he is a very influential person in an industry that I want to break into.”

“Listen, just think of it like this… whatever happens, you’re going to put your best foot forward. If you meet his standards he’ll take you on. If you don’t, he won’t. It’s that simple. So don’t stress.”

“Of course, I’m going to stress. What if I say something stupid and make a fool of myself?”

He chuckles. “That won’t happen.” He throws his arm around my shoulder and pulls me into his body then leans both of us back into the couch cushions.

His body this close to mine is exactly what I need. As I sit pressed up against him my heart rate starts to even out.

I don’t know how it’s happened so quickly, but I think I’m in love with Reid. I’ve never been in love before, so I can’t exactly be sure, but the feelings I have for Reid are intense. He has slowly become everything to me, and I want to be his. It’s a terrifying prospect, but one that also gives me peace.

It’s taken two weeks since our tryst in the garden for Chef Aranda’s schedule to allow for this meeting. Although I thought I had talked Reid down from his worries about what all this means for us, in the intervening time I have noticed he has been pulling away from me.

He hasn’t done anything overt. We practically spend the same amount of time together that we always have, but he’s been distant in a way. His energy has changed. I’ve been meaning to talk to him about it, but haven’t found the right time. I guess now is as good a time as ever.

“Hey, you’re fine with all this, right?” I ask.

“With you meeting Gabriel? Yeah, of course I am. Why do you ask?”

I shrug. “I don’t know, I’ve just felt like things between us have been a little off lately. I just wanted to make sure you were still okay with this, because if you aren’t, we can call it off. Even right now.”

He laughs. “Thank you for your consideration, but I’m fine with this. In fact, I am rooting for you. I guess what you’ve been sensing is work stress. Eve has become even more insufferable in the new year.”

“I hope everything is going fine with that.”

“Yeah, everything is all right. Nothing much to report. She makes moves, I make moves. We go round and round.”

“I want it all to work out well for you.”

“I want that too. At any rate, things are going to come to a head soon.”

On that note, the doorbell rings, and I shoot to my feet.
